Last week, hospitals in the Brazilian capital sounded the emergency alarm. They were inundated with people who are infected with breakbone fever, a disease which is caused by a virus and transmitted by the tiger mosquito. Every hour, some fifty new patients registered in the hospitals of Rio de Janeiro, according to the Brazilian minister of Health. 'This is definitely an epidemic'. During the past year, at least fifty people died of the disease.
